Manassas VA is a wonderful place to visit and a great destination for those looking for things to do in the Northern Virginia region. Known for being the location of two major Civil War battles, it is also home to several interesting museums and landmarks. It is also known for its excellent breweries, distilleries, and restaurants that satisfy your appetite.
The first major land battle of the Civil War occurred in 1861 near Manassas, when the Union Army under General Irvin McDowell marched west from Alexandria rather than south towards Richmond. McDowell planned to seize Manassas and establish a supply depot on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad (O&A) extending eastward from Alexandria through Manassas Junction. The Union Army would then move along the O&A line south to Gordonsville and follow the Virginia Central railway to Richmond, which they eventually captured.
This area of Virginia was once a part of an Algonquian-speaking boundary zone, and John Smith indicated that Native Americans lived in villages around the Occoquan River and near navigable rivers in the Fall Line. These villages were the beginnings of what is now Manassas, and they may have been the center of settlement for many generations before the English colonists came to this area in 1607.
There are plenty of museums to visit in Manassas, with the Manassas Museum being one of the most popular among visitors. The museum contains several interesting exhibits, including a great display of uniforms and weapons from the two Civil War battles.
Another popular attraction is the Manassas National Battlefield Park, established in 1940 and preserves the sites of both battles. The park also has several important historical sites, one of Virginia’s 22 designated national parks.
If you are a fan of history and want to experience it firsthand, this is the place for you! The museum at the battlefield park is not only informative but also has some excellent reenactments that can be enjoyed.
This is also a great location for those who enjoy outdoor activities, as the park contains many hiking trails that families and friends can enjoy. The park is located on the outskirts of the city and is a great destination for a day trip!
For those interested in arts and culture, there is a great art studio called the ARTfactory that is perfect for those looking to take a class. The studio is located inside the old Candy Factory building, which has three stories and includes a theater in the round, a gallery, and a classroom.
The ARTfactory is a great place to visit for those looking to learn about the arts in Manassas, and they have an extensive list of classes that can be taken. There are both one-time and long-term classes available, so check out what is offered in the studio before planning a trip.
